Finally, this summer, the Target drought in New York City will be quenched, as the Minneapolis purveyor of cheap chic will unveil its first Manhattan outpost at East River Plaza shopping center on 116th Street in East Harlem.
The buildup to the July 25 opening will have the elements of P.T. Barnum. The 10-car No. 6 train that will deposit riders on a platform linking to the store by a pedestrian bridge will be wrapped through September from stem to stern in Target’s iconic red-and-white advertising.
To fully integrate itself into the fabric of the community, Target has held a series of dinners with influential Harlem cultural leaders, from filmmaker Albert Maysles to former fashion model Bethann Hardison, owner of a modeling agency that bears her name and founder of the Black Girls Coalition.
A star-studded opening party on July 21 will feature a replica of the Apollo Theater stage with a performance by rapper and Harlem resident Doug E. Fresh and food supplied by renowned New York chef Marcus Samuelsson, who is opening Red Rooster nearby this fall.
Target is featuring custom apparel and accessory collections from local designers, including Isabel Toledo and her artist husband Ruben, Stephen Burrows and Mr. Samuelsson, whose kitschy potholders featuring bananas and vegetables are meant to extol the virtues of fresh produce to the neighborhood, he said.
Ms. Toledo designed a line of beach wear featuring Mr. Toledo’s art work. A percentage of each purchase will benefit a Harlem charity of the designers’ choice.
Mr. Toledo said he had never been to a Target until two years ago, when he visited his sister in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
